143 - Self Publishing Vendor Agreements

Today’s Topic: Self Publishing Vendor Agreements - Rights, File and Design Ownership, and Correcting Something That’s Gone Wrong…

It was recently brought to my attention by a new client wishing to hire me for services that perhaps there are some misunderstandings with ownership of files and rights in the book publishing process. I thought this might be a good topic for discussion for the self-published author. I think we can easily cut through some of the red tape with a pretty quick episode to help you gain an understanding of how to protect yourself and move forward as a self-published author.

What I learned in conversations with the gal, that did eventually hire me, was that there is more than likely a breakdown in the understanding of processes more than anything else. You see, if you’ve never done this before you just don’t know what you don’t know. And knowing the process will clear up a lot of misunderstanding. You still need to...

139 - The Scary World of Audiobooks and AI

Today’s Topic: The Scary World of Audiobooks and AI

You’ll likely be stepping into an unknown as you step into the creation of an audiobook. It can be a similar journey to writing your book, but this time you’re just in the business of reproducing it in audio form. You’ve already done the hard work but now you’re trying to decide both if an audiobook is for you and if so, how to create it.

I can’t tell you how many are giving bad advice on audiobook creation and wow! Every time I hear something, not just about the scams, but scary new processes, you know I’ve got to bring some truth to it. Honestly, I get really angry when people get taken advantage of. So, lets clear up a few things in the world of audiobooks…

Let me first begin by telling you that I created my audiobook for FREE!!! It’s shouldn’t break the bank unless of course you want nothing to do with any of it. I mean… that’s the sure way...

Today’s Topic: What’s All the Fuss About A Publishing Imprint?

Sometimes I sit down to write a podcast episode and I think, maybe I don’t have something to say, then all of a sudden something comes through me and I could go on and on. This episode was originally designed to be just a quickie, but well… this is why I have created a podcast - I have far more to say than I realize until I start talking! Once I got going on this topic it just seemed to open up more to...

It’s been awhile since I was here. So much going on it’s hard to put into words. One of these days I will get another podcast up and going that will be a bit more of me speaking my truth and I’ll share more there. I do share a bit of my thoughts at the end of this podcast, but for now lets get into todays show…

One of the reasons I began this podcast was to help new authors understand some of the pitfalls and truths about the publishing industry. Sometimes I...

079 - If Self-Publishing Is a Gamble Why Is Donald Trump Jr. Doing It?

Hey Guys! Nicole Gabriel here!

I’ve been wanting to talk about this for awhile. Given that politics is so dividing currently, let’s talk about the division in self publishing vs traditional publishing as well…

Have you seen the chatter on Donald Trump Jr…the article in the New York Times says:

Self-Publishing Is a Gamble. Why Is Donald Trump Jr. Doing It?
His next book, “Liberal Privilege,” comes with an unusual distribution plan and no publishing house behind it, making it something of a curiosity in the industry.

I’ll post the link to the article over on my blog: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/06/books/donald-trump-jr-liberal-privilege.html

Literary agents are calling it “a risk” that Trump choses to self publish and they are claiming he hired researchers to comb through Mr. Biden’s record and wrote the book in about three months during lock down.

The article discusses the high-level differences between traditional...

049 - The Greatest Mistake Self Published Authors Make

mistakes self publishing Jun 07, 2020

Hey Guys! A big rainy thunderstorm here in Utah today! My pups are here at my feet snoring as usual and I’m all bundled up in a warm fleece with a pot of chai tea on the stove. I hope you’re doing well! Feeling pretty blessed here myself!

I’ve been thinking a bit about where my authors are once they’ve written their book. Let me paint a picture for you and see if you can relate… You write and publish a book then you go off to a speaking engagement and a venue that also has a bookstore.

You meander into the bookstore the first chance you get and inquire with the clerk about the opportunity of them stocking and selling your book.

They walk you over to the computer and punch in your title. They ask “is your book in in the Ingrams distribution system?” and you stare at them not knowing what that is. You had no idea such a system existed but you give them your title and author name nonetheless and they proceed to search....

048 - Why Not to Use a Publisher

Hey Guys! Nicole Gabriel here!

One of my more popular episodes was one of my first…”Are You Holding Out For A Publisher?”

We’re going to go a bit more in depth on this today.

Here’s what it really comes down to…do you want to be an author or a writer of a book? Myself, I prefer to work with writers of a book. There are other coaches that will work with novel and fiction writers. As a book cover and layout designer I can do both and my system will get any book published. But, my strength is working with people that are already successful in their day job that are looking to add a book to their overall business plan.

Back in 2013 Forbes contributor Nick Morgan wrote an article. He began with “Here’s the problem with self-publishing: no one cares about your book. That’s it in a nutshell. There are somewhere between 600,000 and 1,000,000 books published every year in the US alone, depending on which stats you...

046 - A "Professional" Book Verses A Self Published Book

Hey Guys!

As someone who’s had a podcast now for a few years I’m watching the birth of many new shows pop up as a result us all being locked in at home. Some of them are really great and I hope they stick around.

Podcasting is a great way to communicate if you have something to say, but I’m kind of looking at this like the gym after new years. It will boom and then everyone will get tired of all the work it takes to keep up with fresh new ideas, finding guests, editing, and production. Many may also begin to phase out when they lack quantifiable results or they’ll simply just go back to work.

Having a podcast may not produce a direct return on your investment but it’s a great tool for creating awareness of the other things you do. Since it’s not supported monetarily the only way you can gauge results is on visitor numbers and just sorta hope you can get them to convert. But, what are you converting them to? Have you built the...

024 - Don’t Hold Out for an Agent or Publisher!

Do you have an idea for a book? Have you told yourself that one day when you have time you’ll start looking into the steps of writing it? Are you thinking about a legacy book, a memoire, a children’s book, a spiritual or experiential or self-help book? Whatever the genre of the book is you are looking to write, there is someone out there looking to make a profit on your efforts!

Getting a lucrative deal with an agent or publishing house is well… kinda just like how you heard about your mom’s cousin’s son’s girlfriend’s daughter that won the lottery…you can find a publisher to partner with…but yeah…like winning the lottery—not everyone gets the winning ticket!

It used to be that books were only written by the highly educated or the wealthy, but since over a million of them are rolling off the presses each year these days there are far more authors writing books than there are publishers offering big...
